The effects and risks of chemicals for the environment have to be assessed in order to secure different human requirements and to limit their influences on the ecosystem. Since the terrestrial environment is associated with the atmosphere and aquatic systems, there is a need to conduct risk assessments for plants, soil-dwelling organisms, invertebrates and vertebrates in terrestrial and aquatic surroundings. Additionally, the accumulation potential of toxic compounds in food items and through the food chain has to be considered. The framework for these assessments is specified by the regulatory bodies.
